Rules & Regulations

General Information

COMMUNICATION - The LACC Office will communicate exclusively through company coordinators. Employees should direct all questions concerning LACC to their company coordinators.

HEATS – For events that require placement in heats (Track and Swim Meets), we will ask your competitors for “seed times” (approximate finish time). This will take place at check-in and will ensure the Meet has accurate heats. Please be sure your competitors are aware.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS - Brackets and Schedules will be posted on the LACC website in the “Event Information” section. These include: 3-on-3 Basketball, Darts, Disc Golf, Dodgeball, Fishing, Flag Football, Golf, Pool, Racquetball, 3v3 Soccer, Softball, Swim Meet Schedule, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track Meet Schedule, Volleyball and Weightlifting. Maps for the 5K, Bike Race, Half Marathon and Duathlon/Triathlon will also be posted. Volunteer Assignments (for each company) will also be available.

GAME TIME IS FORFEIT TIME / CHECK-IN DEADLINES ARE ADHERED TO – Please remind your participants to allow themselves plenty of time to get to their events.

NO RESCHEDULING OF GAMES - In an event such as the LACC, involving more than 30,000 individuals, games cannot be rescheduled to accommodate the schedules of individual participants. Games may not be rescheduled by the participants involved. Violation of this rule will result in forfeiture of the competitors involved.

NO FORFEITS, PLEASE - Once schedules are posted, please make sure entrants in each event are notified of their game times and locations. It is crucial your competitor, or a legal substitute, be present at the event for which your company is entered. Much time and effort goes into scheduling each event to ensure the Games run smoothly. Forfeits not only upset the scheduled event, but also take away from the spirit and competition of the Games. Please emphasize to your employees that by signing up for an event, they are making a commitment to be there. Forfeits from the previous year are used in seeding. Penalty Points will be assessed to those individuals or teams who do not show up for a bracketed event (or Golf). In the following tournaments: 3-on-3 Basketball, Darts, Softball and Soccer - teams forfeiting their first game in the tournament are forfeited out of the tournament, and penalty points will be assessed. If a team forfeits a game after having already played a game or games in the 3-on-3 Basketball, Darts, Softball or Soccer tournaments, that forfeit will be counted as a loss. In the Dodgeball and Volleyball Tournaments, teams forfeiting ANY game in pool play are forfeited out of the tournament. If a team in the Dodgeball or Volleyball Tournaments advance past pool play and forfeit a game in the single elimination bracket play, that forfeit will be counted as a loss.

VOLUNTEERS - Each company is required to provide volunteers for an event(s) in the LACC. What a great way for other individuals to become involved in the Games! Each volunteer will receive a point toward his/her company’s overall point total and a t-shirt from the LACC. One point will be deducted from the company’s overall total for each volunteer who does not show up for his/her assigned event. You can sign up to become a volunteer here.

DRINK WATER! - Please supply your own water and/or supplemental drink for your athletes at the outdoor events. This is highly recommended due to the potential for hot temperatures. We will have water at most of the events, but it is always good to be prepared with your own as well. In an effort to be Green, LACC suggests you use re-usable water bottles.

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS - Medals are awarded to the top three finishers in each event. Most medals are awarded on-site, after the event. If your competitor does not receive their medal at the time of the event, please contact our office and we will make plans to get that to your winner!

TEAM AWARDS - Team awards will be given to the top eight companies in each division. These awards will be presented at the LACC Awards Celebration.

MINIMUM 8 IN AN EVENT - If there are less than 8 entrants in an event, the LACC Board of Directors reserves the right to cancel the event or combine it with another age group or division, if appropriate.

AMATEURS ONLY - The LACC is an amateur event. Individuals who are considered professional status by the national affiliate organization for their particular sport are not allowed to compete in that event in the LACC. Retired professionals must be retired prior to September 10th, 2016 in order to compete in their respective event. Should you have a team member that could be considered a professional based on part-time employment or tournament status they hold in their event, please consult the national affiliate organization’s policy. If that person, based on the ruling by the national affiliate organization, is considered a professional, they are not eligible to participate in that event.

ID’s REQUIRED - The LACC Board of Directors reserves the right to ask for ID from participants at random during the course of the Games. Please ask that your participants have an ID with them at all LACC events. Participants who are asked and are not able to produce an ID at an Event will be forfeited from the game. In team events, the team will forfeit that game. Please see the LACC Protest Policy for more information on protests and disqualifications.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED – You may substitute for your original entrants, provided the substitute’s name appears on your Participation List, and that the substitute is in the same age group as the original entrant (if substituting in an age group event). See Participation List guidelines for additional information.

EVENTS WILL BE HELD, RAIN OR SHINE - Events will only be postponed or cancelled in the event that weather conditions present a direct danger to participants. If an event is postponed, the LACC Board of Directors reserves the right to reschedule anytime. Such rescheduling will be based on time, facility availability, and financial and/or organizational constraints. Because of facility and organizational complications, it is certain that at least some events will not be rescheduled in the event of a rain-out: these events include Softball, 5K, Half Marathon, Walk, Kick-off Party, and the Duathlon/Triathlon/Team Triathlon.

Company Count Information

Company counts are due to the LACC office by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 12, 2017.
These counts must be submitted on your company letterhead and notarized. We only need the total count; you are not required to include each eligible employee’s name. Please note, this is the official number which will be used in determining the 2017 LACC Divisions.

As an individual participating athlete, you may sign up here.
Participants must include their age and birth year. This will enable your event sign-up page to include all relevant age-group events (based on age) and include you in the appropriate age category. Please remember, your age is based on December 31, 2016.
As an individual athlete, if you cannot make an event date and want to replace your name with someone else, contact the LACC office.

Company Participation List

The Participation List is a list of all the employees from your company who are eligible to participate in the Games, and have signed the paper waiver.
Any participants who are added manually (by a coordinator) must fill out and sign a hard copy waiver form which must be submitted to the LACC Office.
Each company’s Participation List is duplicated and will be on-site at each event for use by LACC Staff.
Anyone attempting to check-in for an event whose name is not on your Company’s Participation List will not be allowed to participate.
The Participation List serves a purpose:
It tells LACC the names and ages of individuals who you are authorizing to represent your company in the LACC Games.
A valid driver’s license or other picture ID may be required for identification before a competitor or substitute is allowed to participate. Please be sure participants have their ID with them at events.
Participation is based on the age a person will be as of December 31, 2016.

Eligibility Requirements

COMPANY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Company is defined as a recognized legal entity, such as, for example, a corporation, partnership, limited liability company, city, town, or other governmental agency or department.

In order to meet registration deadlines for the companies and individual participants, LACC requires the following:

  • Companies that split, spin off, sell off, or are divested can participate within LACC as a single company as long as the division has not been completed prior to January 1, 2016. Companies that may be acquired, merged, bought out, or consolidated can participate as a single company so long as the union occurs before November 14, 2016.
  • Subsidiaries of participating companies may compete jointly with their parent company, so long as the parent owns at least 50% of the subsidiary, and all subsidiary employees are included in the total employee count.
  • Small Companies (75 employees or less) may combine with other Small Companies to form a single LACC participating unit, so long as each is in good standing as a recognized legal entity, meeting the LACC Company Eligibility Requirements as listed above.
  • Individuals and sole proprietors are considered to be Small Companies.
  • Individual participants may register for the LA Corporate Challenge as long as the list the company that they work for or own.

EMPLOYEE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Employees of participating companies are eligible to participate provided they are employed in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area (see definition above) at the time of the event, they are not included on the roster of another participating company, and they meet one of the following conditions:

  1. A full-time continuous employee as of November 14, 2016. A full-time employee is an individual who is normally required to work 35 or more hours per week.
  2. A part-time/on-call continuous employee who has been employed as of November 14, 2015 and has worked a minimum of 750 hours between November 14, 2015 and November 14, 2016.
  3. A part-time/on-call continuous employee who has been employed as of January 1, 2016 and has worked a minimum of 165 hours between January 1, 2016 and November 14, 2016.

The dates listed above are in alignment with the due date for company counts for determining LACC divisions. In addition, employees who meet one of the following criteria are also eligible to participate:

  1. Retired employees of a participating company may participate with their former employer. A retired employee is defined as an employee who is no longer employed and meets the participating company’s retirement requirements.
  2. An employee who satisfies the normal eligibility requirements but is transferred from the San Diego area by his or her employer between the roster submission deadline and the date of the event.
  3. Laid-off employees, who satisfy normal eligibility requirements, may participate as long as they were laid-off between November 14th, 2016 and the date of the event. However, these laid-off individuals are eligible only if they are not employed elsewhere at the time of the LACC, and are still receiving benefits from the participating company at the time of the LACC.
  4. Contract employees may participate with a participating company, provided that the contract employee meets the normal eligibility requirements. If contract employees meet the normal eligibility requirements for more than one LACC participating company, the employee is only allowed to compete for one of those companies.

Individuals who terminate employment prior to the event may not participate with their former employer.

AGE OF PARTICIPANTS & VOLUNTEERS - Participants and Volunteers must be at least 19 years of age by December 31, 2016 to be eligible to participate. All participants will compete in the age category determined by their age as of December 31, 2016. (Age-group participation is based on the competitor’s year of birth.).

Volunteer Information

With over 30,000 participants in 30 different events estimated to compete over a nine-week period, it would not be successful without 1,600+ dedicated volunteers representing the participating companies! Volunteers are so important that points will be awarded to each company for their required Volunteers!

Your Company will be required to provide Volunteers for an event. The following table below includes the number of Volunteers required per Company by Division size:

One point will be awarded for each Volunteer when they check-in and sign a Volunteer Waiver at their assigned event. In order to be eligible for the Spirit Award, your company must have fulfilled your assigned volunteer requirement.

We are giving each company an opportunity to provide a list of the top four (4) preferred events at which your company would like to provide Volunteers. We will do our best to fulfill one of your requested choices. We will need to assign Volunteers in an efficient manner to benefit both participants and companies. It is possible that the event assigned to your Company may not be one of your top four (4) choices.

Encourage your employees to get involved and be a Volunteer. Not only do Volunteers participate in earning points for their company, but they can cheer on the athletes, increase their knowledge of a sport, meet new people, have fun, and receive their free t-shirt! Please emphasize the importance of your volunteers fulfilling their commitment. One point will be deducted from your company total for each volunteer who does not show up for his or her assigned event, or who does not stay for the entire assigned time frame.

We give first preference on events to companies in the order that the selections have been made. We will time stamp your selection form, but please note-any change to this form will change the time stamp. So please make sure the info is correct the first time you enter it!!
VOLUNTEERS MUST BE 19 YEARS OF AGE AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2016.

Protest Policy

All protests must be presented in writing and accompanied by $25.00.
Protests based solely on judgment calls are not allowed. A protest can be filed on a question of professionalism and/or the eligibility of a participant.

  1. In a protest regarding whether a participant is a professional, the burden of proof as to professional status rests on the person or company making the protest. (See General Information, “Amateurs Only” section for more information regarding Professional Status.)
  2. In a protest regarding the eligibility of a participant, the burden of proof as to eligibility rests on the participant or that participant’s company coordinator, in the form of picture identification.
  • When the eligibility of a competitor is in question, the protestor must identify that competitor to LACC Staff. Upon receiving the $25.00 protest fee, LACC Staff will request a picture ID from the competitor in question. If that competitor cannot produce a picture ID, or proves not to be an eligible participant, he/she will be disqualified from the competition, in team competition, the team will forfeit the game and the protestor will be refunded the $25.00.
  • In tournament play, teams will forfeit the game in which a participant failed to produce an ID. In double-elimination tournaments, if the participant in question can provide an ID proving eligibility prior to their next scheduled game, that team will only forfeit the previous game not the entire event. If that participant can’t provide an ID prior to their next scheduled game time, that team will be forfeited from the entire event or tournament. Also, please note that a 25-point penalty will be assessed to any company found in violation of the Employee Eligibility Rules. Please be certain that all of your participants meet our eligibility requirements.
  • If the competitor in question does prove to be an eligible participant, the protestor will lose the $25.00 protest fee, and competition will continue.

PROTESTS MUST BE STATED AT THE TIME OF OCCURRENCE. If such protests occur during a game/match/etc., notify the on-site LACC Staff that the remainder of the game/match/etc. is being played under protest. The appropriate paperwork and fee may be submitted at the end of the match. No protests will be allowed “after the fact”.
PROTESTS MUST ALSO BE STATED BY A PARTICIPANT WHO IS INVOLVED (PLAYING OR COACHING) IN THE GAME OR MATCH IN QUESTION
The $25.00 protest fee will be refunded if the protest is allowed.
The Protest Committee will consist of the LACC Staff on-site at the event in question.

  • Participation Points
    The LACC will award participation points for all competitors in the Games. To receive participation points, competitors must complete the event as designed (track events may not be walked, they must be run; swimming strokes must adhere to Masters’ Swimming Guidelines; disqualifications of any kind will constitute non-participation). Participants will receive one participation point for each event in which they compete, with the following exception; competitors in Track & Field and Swimming may receive a maximum of one participation point for all individual Track & Field events and a maximum of one participation point for all individual Swimming events. However, Track & Field or Swimming participants may receive additional points if they compete on relay teams.

  • Penalty Points
    LACC will assess Penalty Points to those companies whose competitors do not show up for bracketed events (and golf). It certainly diminishes the spirit of the Games when a team or individual travels from across the city to participate in one of these events, only to have their opponent forfeit. Also, LACC is spending valuable funds on empty field or court space in these instances. Penalty points will be assessed only for the following events:

    In the following tournaments, 3-on-3 Basketball, Darts, Softball and Soccer, teams forfeiting their first game in the tournament are forfeited out of the tournament, and penalty points will be assessed. If a team forfeits a game after having already played a game or games in the 3-on-3 Basketball, Darts, Softball, or Soccer tournaments, that forfeit will be counted as a loss. In the Dodgeball and Volleyball Tournaments, teams forfeiting ANY games in pool play are forfeited out of the tournament. If a team in the Dodgeball or Volleyball Tournaments advance past pool play and forfeit a game in the Single-Elimination Bracket Play, that forfeit will be counted as a loss.

A 25-point penalty will be assessed to any company found in violation of the Employee Eligibility Rules. Any participant who is not on your company’s participation list, who competes in the LACC will be eliminated from competition, the company will be forfeited from that event, and the company will receive a 25-point deduction from their overall LACC total. Please be certain that all of your participants meet our eligibility requirements.

  • Volunteer Points
    One point will be awarded for each volunteer who assists with the Games. Your company will be assigned a specific number of volunteers to an event and that Volunteer Assignment will be released on the LACC website on Friday, April 1. The number of volunteers required will vary by division, but will remain constant within divisions. Each company will have the opportunity to score equal volunteer points with other companies in their division. Volunteers will be required to sign a waiver when they report to their assigned event. These waiver forms are then used to accumulate volunteer points. Please stress to your volunteers the importance of reporting to a Game Captain when they arrive to an event and to sign the waiver form.
    Volunteer Penalty Points: One point will be deducted for each volunteer who does not show up for their assigned event. Volunteer Points will be awarded at the conclusion of the Games.
  • Points Awarded in the Event of a Tie
    In double-elimination tournaments, 5th and 6th place are not determined, nor are 7th and 8th place. 5th and 6th place teams will awarded a tie and will receive 1⁄2 the total of 5th plus 6th place points. 7th and 8th place teams will also be awarded a tie and will receive 1⁄2 the total of 7th plus 8th place points.

In single elimination tournaments, 5th through 8th place is not determined. Each of these teams will receive 1⁄4 the total of 5th through 8th place points.

In the occurrence of a tie in any non-bracketed event, individuals or teams will equally split the total points available for the places they occupy in the final results of that event.

Points for all events will be accumulated during the course of the Games. Volunteer Points will be accumulated at the end of the Games. Based on company point totals at the conclusion of the Games, awards will be presented to the top eight companies in each Division at the Los Angeles Corporate Challenge Awards Celebration.
